Coping With the Loss of Steve Jobs

Not only buy some from Apple, but learn some too.

Steve Jobs on Death

The sudden death of Apple's co-founder Steve Jobs swept across the globe, as many mourned the loss of a great visionary so passionately associated with innovation. I felt it would be apt to share some ways that people around the world (including myself) coped with his loss and showed their appreciation for the father of Apple.

1. Exploring Steve's Principles To Success
The Steve Jobs Way - Biography

As a follower of the Cult of Mac, picking up "The Steve Jobs Way" - a biography by his close colleague, Jay Elliot, seemed to answer my questions on what one can learn from the 'Boy Genius' himself. A principle that Jobs encouraged was to 'Do What You Love'.

"Passion are those ideas that don't leave you alone. They are the hopes, dreams and possibilities that consume your thoughts." (via Innovate Like Steve Jobs)

Following his list of leadership principles, Jobs used his passion to bring ingenious ideas that moved our society forward. The biography serves as a way for Apple fans to remember how Jobs forever changed how we work, play and communicate with technology.

2. Share Your Thoughts On Steve
Apple updated their Steve Jobs page to a tribute page titled 'Remembering Steve' as people around the world are given an outlet to share their emotions, thoughts and memories about the legend himself. Below are a few messages left on the page.

It proved to be refreshing for many to let out their feelings on how Jobs has changed their lives or impacted them. Share your own at rememberingsteve@apple.com.

3. Set Steve In Stone
A statue of Steve Jobs.
As a form of gratitude, the founder of Graphisoft, a Hungarian software company, commissioned a bronze statue of Steve Jobs in Budapest as Jobs had helped the company out since 1984 with providing resources and networks. It makes me wonder if this act of appreciation will trigger a chain reaction amongst the numerous organizations and fellow visionaries that Jobs supported. Perhaps, Apple fans will even soon be able to look forward to a wax statue of Jobs at Madame Tussauds'.

3. A Shrine for Steve
Within a short time since Jobs' passing, impromptu shrines popped up across Apple stores in America, and even in Asian countries. The tributes revolve around appreciation of Jobs’ legacy or grief over his loss.

At the Meatpacking District in Manhattan, the window of an Apple store is covered with dedications to Jobs in the form of Post-it notes, flowers and semi-eaten apples. It has been long since Jobs death yet the mini tribute is still up and strong.

Soon enough, another shrine for the Jobs was set up in a flagship Apple store on 5th Avenue in New York. I found it admirable that various Apple fans, ranging from consultants to graphic designers, braved the cold and paid their respects by placing items from Apple gadgets to handwritten notes.

The shrines caught up quickly in countries such as China, Japan, Hong Kong and even Korea. Jobs' work has touched lives globally as more countries began to build shrines commemorating the legacy he left behind.

  2. Indeed as Barack Obama stated, " the world has lost a visionary". However his legacy lives on.Steve Jobs was a man who could see things beyond this world and into the future. He always wanted to change the way the world saw things, he believed in the impossible. He was the perfect example of Macintosh's slogan, ' think different'.

Steve jobs : " because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do."

    1. That is a very scary point you've made there and something most of us might have overlooked. We do contemplate the future of Apple without Jobs, but I don't think we really understand the possible severity (in terms of losing greater ideas/innovations) with the loss of Jobs.

Leaving behind his legacy for everyone of us to embrace. Your example of how many people across the world paid tribute to Steve Jobs was brilliant. 12. Other than producing beautiful products, Steve Jobs have taught us many things.

He taught us that mistake is an important step towards success. When we fall, that is where we learn to stand up again. Yes, Steve Jobs dropped out of school, but he is now an icon to the world. Why? This is because, he thinks that the war is not over yet.

Syam, I like when you mention Steve Job's principles to success! Yes I agree "Do what you love". This is where we succeed, doing what we love to do.

    Nice post syam!

    1. I agree! It's so relatable to what we learn in school and what we are told by peers and our teachers - to do what we LOVE.
It's the basic foundation of all our ventures in life, and ensuring that we are happy when pursuing them (: Really gotta give it up to Jobs for following what he loved!

Thanks for the refreshing comment, Zahar!

  15. Jobs would always be remembered as a creative genius and a wonderful innovator.

I wonder if Apple would continue to bring us good products after Steve's death. He was indeed a creative genius, despite all his flaws, he was a really good innovator. Wonder if the future Apple products would be of the same standard.
